Hi, I really enjoyed your single storey extension blog. Are you planning to publish one of the loft conversion online?

Thanks Phil. Yeah, I have loads of photos, just need to find the time to write it up and publish. I did a daily update for the rear extension, and decided to write more logical posts for the loft, but not actually done that yet!

    Hi.

This might be a really stupid question, but how did you go about the planning of the extension? What I mean is do you get a quote first from the builders or do you go to an architect first? Whats the best way of planning/carrying out the build, is it employing local tradesmen for each skill (Electrician/plumber/plasterer etc) or would the building contractor manage everything?
I’m just starting to do the research for what I hope will be our extension but I’m surprised by the lack of real info out there, most websites presume that everyone knows the basics (maybe I’m just think 🙂 )

    Many thanks

Hi Mike, the best thing, in my opinion, is to decide what you want, and then draw up a basic plan for it (most importantly depth, width, types of rooms). Then invite a few builders to quote for the build. This will give you a rough idea of the cost without splashing out on an architect. Builders quotes will vary massively – for my latest project (not yet published) quotes varied from £40k to £110k. But, if all are over budget, or massively under budget, you can revise your plans for something smaller, or bigger. Then get the plans drawn up. I did the most recent ones myself for the planning stage – planning does not require anything complex. I might write a blog post about this, sounds like people will find it useful! Use MyBuilder.com for quotes – its easy and you’ll get a wide range of builders, who may give you better ideas too.
